The day started with two activities - water filtration and marshmallow structure. The goal of the water filtration project was to filter out the dirty water made from green dyed water, oil and paper by using a water bottle and using cotton balls, sand, gravel and paper towels to clear out the particulates from the water. The second activity was for students to make the tallest and most creative structure they could by using unlimited miniature marshmallows and toothpicks. Each group was then judged on the cleanliness of the water, tallest tower and most creative structure. The winning groups got ASCE t-shirts.
The middle schoolers were then broken up into groups and some took tours of the seismic, geotech, transportation, water treatment and hydraulics labs. During that time other groups visited the environment fair, hosted by Dr. Fairbank's CE 351 class or listened to ASCE officers give presentations on civil engineering. The groups rotated between events.
